Together in Every Chapter: Book Babies Fall Celebration

This past Saturday, Old Mill Farm in Durham came alive with the sounds of a fall celebration: children giggling as they met the farm animals, families gathering to toast marshmallows, and pages turning in small, eager hands. More than 200 parents and children from our Durham Book Babies community came together under clear autumn skies to celebrate another year of growing, reading, and discovering side by side. Between painted faces, sticky s’mores fingers, and arms full of brand-new books, it was hard to find anyone without a smile.

What is Book Babies?

Book Babies is a five-year early literacy coaching partnership that begins the day a baby is born. Book Harvest literacy coaches partner with families of Medicaid-eligible children through quarterly visits, sharing tools and encouragement that nurture the bond between parent and child. Along the way, children build home libraries of more than 100 brand-new books in the languages their families speak, laying a joyful foundation for school readiness that carries them all the way through Pre-K and kindergarten enrollment.

More Than a Reading Program

Book Babies is so much more than books. It’s a community of friendship, leadership, and passionate champions for children’s literacy. Year after year, children and parents grow in confidence together, reminding us that there’s no limit to what they can achieve or to the ways they’ll shape the world around them. As one parent shared:

“Creo que es algo maravilloso que los niños lean libros, y mi hijo, la verdad, a él le encanta leer cuentos… Siento que es algo muy importante y que no debería perderse en estos tiempos.”

“I think it’s wonderful for children to read books, and honestly, my son loves reading stories… I feel it’s something very important that shouldn’t be lost in these times.”

A Storytime to Remember

One of the day’s brightest moments was storytime. A Book Harvest literacy coach and a Book Babies parent took turns reading a bilingual children’s book aloud, their voices moving between two languages as children crowded close. Each child followed along in a copy of their very own, a book they harvested that day to take home, read again and again, and keep.

Why We Celebrate

Every fall, this gathering is our chance to honor the families at the heart of Book Babies. It’s a time to make new friends, deepen the connections between families and our team, and simply soak up a beautiful day in a beautiful place together.

As families headed home with smudged face paint, full bellies, and new stories tucked under their arms, the day left us with a simple truth: when families come together around books, every child’s potential shines a little brighter. Here’s to another year of reading, growing, and celebrating with our Book Babies families. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds!
