they/them
Start Date: February 2024

Kai is a Literacy Coach with Book Babies, supporting all aspects of the Book Babies program, in particular providing books and literacy-rich home visits to children and their families from birth.

Kai has over 12 years of experience working with youth in education. Kai is a trained language justice worker, interpreter and translator, working in English, Spanish, and French. They studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for undergrad, majoring in African, African-American, and African Diaspora Studies. Kai worked as an oral history intern, facilitating civil rights workshops in Middle Schools in the Triangle. Their interest in oral history also took them to Northeastern Brazil to conduct an oral history project on Afro-Brazilian culture, history, and art. They later worked as a high school teaching assistant in Reunion Island, a French Department in the Indian Ocean, and also as a trip leader, guiding Middle School students through the rain forests and towns of Costa Rica.

Kai is thrilled to join the Book Babies Team because they love working with children and families and are passionate about educational access. Kai’s favorite children’s book is the Lorax and they love reading, the outdoors, and discovering new music.
