Your taxes, your choice: PB Durham

May 13, 2021

Your taxes, your choice! The City of Durham is allowing YOU to choose where $1 million of the city’s budget will go, and Book Harvest is among the nominees!

Book Harvest is thrilled to be among the finalists to receive funds from the Durham Participatory Budgeting Program. Launched in 2018, the PB program in Durham is an excellent way for Durham residents to have a say in their city’s allocation of funds. (www.pbdurham.org)

This year, Durham City Council approved $1 million for Durham connected nonprofit and community organizations who are directly serving those residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing issues contributing to racial, economic, and social injustices. There are three Grant Fund Focus Areas: Community Building + Economic Opportunities; Health and Human Services; and Children, Youth and Family Wellness.

Book Harvest and other organizations submitted applications to be considered for funding up to $50,000. Finalists were selected and now it’s up to Durham residents to vote! You can vote for multiple organizations in each category.

Book Harvest’s proposal includes a request to fund its Parent-to-Parent initiative, which empowers parent leaders to build community-rooted parent networks that have direct, unimpeded access to the resources, information, and support that unleash the world of possibilities for every child. Parent-to-Parent consists of Book Harvest participants and who know firsthand the benefits of having access to resources for their children: books in the home from birth; regular shared reading routines; early language activities and experiences; engagement in pre-K programs; advocacy in formal school settings.

How to Vote:

Durham residents (ages 13+) have until June 6th to vote. Book Harvest is included in the Children, Youth and Families section: https://durham.mysocialpinpoint.com/pb-durham/voting/
