Where Families Gather, Books Belong: Dvadnie’s Journey with Book Harvest
At Book Harvest, we believe every child deserves the magic of stories, and our mission is as simple as it is powerful: to make sure every child has an abundance of books. Through our programs, we put high-quality books directly into the hands of students at school and deliver them straight to families’ homes. Our goal is to help build home libraries children can cherish for years to come. Yet, there are still families whose shelves remain empty, their curiosity and passion for reading waiting to be sparked.

That’s why Book Harvest brings books into unexpected places—like laundromats, community events, and dedicated book hubs—where families already gather. By filling these everyday spaces with free, accessible books, we make it effortless for children and parents alike to stumble upon the joy of reading, wherever life happens to take them.
Recently, at the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services (IFC) in Carrboro, we sat down with Dvadnie Satterwhite, Resident Advocate and Member Services Associate, who shared a deeply personal story that captures why this approach matters.
Fifteen years ago, Book Harvest launched its very first book hub at IFC—a vibrant spot where children could choose free books to bring home. Among those eager readers was Dvadnie’s own daughter, who, as Dvadnie fondly remembers, “did not just pick a book from the bookshelf. She picked a handful of books… She went home with like six books that night, of which she wanted me to read all of them.” For Dvadnie and her daughter, this wasn’t just about receiving books—it was the start of countless adventures, opening up a world of possibility for a budding reader.

Years later, when Dvadnie returned to IFC as a staff member, she noticed something missing: the bookshelf that had meant so much to her family was no longer there. Determined to restore that sense of possibility for others, she teamed up with Book Harvest to bring back a shelf overflowing with free children’s books. “It gives them an opportunity to be exposed to the joy of books,” she explained. “And there’s nothing like a book to get lost in.” Dvadnie’s journey is a powerful reminder of how meeting families where they are can turn ordinary moments into opportunities for discovery, wonder, and connection.
