Book Harvest is excited to introduce Benay Hicks, our new Communications Manager. We asked her to share a bit about herself and why she’s excited to join the team.
My love of books and storytelling began with my father. My dad, resembling Santa Claus in appearance and demeanor, would regale me with tales of Sherlock Holmes, Junie B. Jones, and Harriet the Spy. Together we would read the chilling stories from Goosebumps and journey to places unknown with Ms. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus. Reading fed my imagination and gave me the courage to dream, to learn, and to explore. It is because of my personal experience with reading that I share the Book Harvest vision of working to ensure every child has access to books, and that parents are given the tools they need to help their children thrive in school and in life.

I am not a stranger to the education landscape of Durham and the Triangle, and have worked with youth in the community for a total of seven years. Most relevant is my previous role as the Director of Operations with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties. I also currently serve on the Board of Directors with Grow Your World, a local nonprofit based out of Chapel Hill. I am deeply passionate about equity in education, and believe that every child has the potential for great things.
I live in Durham with my Australian husband and two miniature Dachshunds, Sir Henry and Sierra. Personal hobbies include Krav Maga, traveling, hiking, and hosting dinner parties. Guilty pleasures include watching cake decorating videos and enjoying good food.
I am excited for my journey with Book Harvest and am thrilled to be part of such a wonderful team!
