Dream Big 2026: How to Run a Book Drive

Ready to make a big impact with a simple, community-powered action? Dream Big is Book Harvest’s annual children’s book drive, and it’s easy to take part!

Each winter, individuals, schools, workplaces, and groups of all kinds across the Triangle collect new and gently used children’s books to help ensure every child can grow up in a home full of books. In 2026, Dream Big marks its 15th year, culminating in a joyful community celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

And you can help us make Dream Big 2026 the most impactful yet! Here's how:

Step 1: Sign Up to Host a Book Drive

Visit bookharvest.org/dreambig to sign up as a Dream Big book drive host. Once you register, Book Harvest will share tips and resources to help you get started.

Step 2: Set Your Dates and Location

Dream Big book drives typically run between December and mid-January. Choose a location that makes sense for your group, such as:

  • A workplace or office

  • A school or classroom

  • Your apartment or even your front porch!

  • A neighborhood group

Step 3: Collect New and Gently Used Children’s Books

Ask participants to donate children’s books in good condition, including:

  • Board books and picture books

  • Early readers

  • Chapter books and middle-grade titles

Clear guidelines help ensure every donated book is one a child will be excited to read and keep.

Step 4: Spread the Word

Let your community know how and why to participate. Share details through email, flyers, announcements, or social media—and remind donors that their books will support local children and families.

Step 5: Bring Your Books to the Dream Big Celebration

Now, we sort and celebrate! Bring your collected books to the Dream Big community celebration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day:

Monday, January 19, 2026

1–4 PM

Boxyard RTP, Durham

This family-friendly event will feature live entertainment and activities for all ages—and it’s the primary drop-off point for Dream Big book drive donations. It’s also a meaningful way to celebrate your impact and honor Dr. King’s legacy of service and community. We have a lot in store that you won't want to miss!

Step 6: Celebrate What You’ve Made Possible

Dream Big is more than a book drive—it’s a movement for literacy, belonging, and book abundance for every child. Every book collected helps build a future where children have the resources they need to thrive.
