Book Harvest Celebrates the Grand Reopening of Our Expanded Family Space and National Headquarters
Yesterday, we had the privilege of welcoming over 150 community members, supporters, and local dignitaries to the grand reopening of Book Harvest's newly expanded Family Space, Volunteer Center, and National Headquarters in Durham. This milestone marks a new chapter in our journey, one that strengthens our commitment to ensuring every child has access to the books they need to thrive.
The event, which featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, symbolized more than just the reopening of our space. It represented the culmination of a summer-long renovation, made possible by the generosity of an anonymous donor. The upgrades were designed with the needs of our families and volunteers at heart, ensuring we can serve more children and continue our mission to nurture literacy from birth.
A Proclamation: Durham, the City of Books
One of the most memorable moments of the event came when Mayor Leonardo Williams took the stage. As children laughed and played in the background, he paused to reflect on their joy, saying,
“Just listen to the future. Can’t you hear it? That is our most cherished thing to protect and nurture in this city. And the best tool you can equip them with that will really empower self and human sustainability is teaching them to read.”
Mayor Williams went on to proclaim September as "Durham: City of Books" month, celebrating the city’s commitment to fostering literacy and a love of reading in every child. We couldn’t be more proud that Durham, home to our headquarters, is embracing the power of books to transform lives.
Exploring the Newly Expanded Space
After the ribbon-cutting, guests were invited to tour the new facilities. Our expanded Family Space now offers more room for older children to read, relax, and play, creating a welcoming environment for kids of all ages. The newly enhanced Volunteer Center was another highlight, showcasing the dedicated space where volunteers will continue their critical work sorting and preparing books to be shared with children across Durham and beyond.
At Book Harvest, we know that books are just the beginning. The renovations and upgrades to our space will enable us to support more families, strengthen our programs, and build towards a future where literacy is a reality for all.
As our Founder and CEO, Ginger Young, shared during the event:
“This expansion makes so much possible – and will allow us to pursue with vigor our big dream that every child grows up with an abundant home library starting on Day One and continuing over the critically important first decade of life.”
What’s Next for Book Harvest?
This event marks a significant moment in Book Harvest’s nearly 14-year journey. We’ve grown, adapted, and embraced new ways to serve our community, and we are ready for what’s ahead. As we look to the future, this expanded space will help us realize our vision of literacy and justice for all.
Our work is far from over. With the continued support of our community, donors, and volunteers, we will push forward, ensuring that every child in Durham and beyond has access to the tools and resources they need to succeed.
