BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A local hospital is helping parents start building their baby’s brain from day one by encouraging a simple act: reading.
A new initiative at Woman’s Hospital is putting books into the hands of families almost as soon as their babies are born.
The initiative is called the “Books from Birth” starter library program.
“New babies are sponges,” Wendy Singleton with Woman’s Hospital Nursing said.

Hospital leaders said the kit has 10 board books, babywear, and tools for parents. These resources help build early literacy routines.
“Some of our most vulnerable babies in our neonatal intensive care unit will be the first to receive them,” said Rene Ragas.
