Bringing the Public Library to the Caswell Community one little library at a time

The Caswell Messenger | Feb 15, 2024

Caswell County covers over 400 square miles. It can be a long trip, 15 miles or more, from the far corners of the county to the Gunn Memorial Library in Yanceyville. For Caswell residents who can’t make the trip to the library, free library books are available as a community service at numerous locations around the county.

These little free library boxes are available due to the efforts of many people. Graig Meyer, now District 23 representative to the NC Senate, led a project to have numerous little free libraries constructed and placed throughout Caswell County a few years ago. Now, these little free libraries make available books supplied by the Gunn Memorial Library or donated by library patrons and nonprofit organizations (we are especially grateful for donations by Book Harvest in Durham).

The books in these boxes are refreshed periodically by the Caswell Friends of the Library and library staff. Everyone may visit these boxes and take a book or books. Residents can swap books of their own with ones in the box too.

Because space is limited and anyone can borrow books, it’s hard to know what people might want to read. The Friends of the Library try to have available a variety of books at each location – fiction, nonfiction, books for teens, and books for children. Books on a certain topic may be requested by leaving a note in the box or calling the library at 336-694-6241.

Little Free Library operates nationwide and around the world. There are over 175,000 locations in 121 countries! Caswell County is just one part of this outreach program that seeks to build community, inspire readers, and expand book access. You can learn more about this program and find more locations by searching online at littlefreelibrary.org.
