Books in a Box: Highlighting Another Year of Impact

A child touches a Books in a Box box of 10 books.

One year ago, we highlighted our Books in a Box program in the blog post 200 Kids and Counting: Help Us Reach More Families!

Today, we are excited to report that in the following year, between February 2025 and January 2026, the program has served 195 more children and 135 incarcerated parents across North Carolina—and we are just getting started.

We recently received a letter from an incarcerated parent enrolled in Books in a Box, highlighting the vital impact of the program:

A snippet of the letter, which reads, "I could never thank Books in a Box enough for what they did for me & my family, and the moments & memories we now share thanks to their books. She's so excited for her next box, and I can't wait either! To see where we go and what adventures those books take us on together. My only hope is for this program & the joy it has brought my family to grow and expand so that as many families are able to experience it for themselves. We have grown closer for it, and every incarcerated individual should have the opportunity to share that with their children."

The writer of this letter is currently unable to visit his family, connecting with them solely through letters and phone calls. Upon hearing about Books in a Box, he signed up right away, and his child called him soon after to tell him about every single book she received.

Then, she asked if he wanted to pick the book for that night, and as he writes: "That's a big deal!"

Books in a Box is a big deal, furthering our mission in a critical way. We are so excited for the future of Books in a Box as it continues to grow.
